How I Work

What’s it like to work with me? You’ll get copy that intrigues and informs your readers.

When something can be read without effort, great effort has gone into its writing.
–Enrique Jardiel Poncela, Spanish writer

Business writing sometimes gets a bad rap for being boring. It doesn’t have to be. The trick is to find the nugget of information that will intrigue readers by telling a story or capturing an emotion. It might take an extra phone call, a carefully posed question, a little research. But it is always there. And it makes the difference between a compelling story and a ho-hum story.

Another way to prevent writing from being boring is to master the art of combining the level of detail and accuracy your sources or subject matter experts want with the brevity that will hold the interest of your audience. That’s where experience — the ability to make a statement accurate in a less wordy way — can count.

When you work with me you get the benefit of 30-plus years of experience that encompasses news reporting and corporate communications. That includes everything from judgment about what information to use and how to position it, to speed (no writer’s block here) and resourcefulness.

Having juggled many freelancers in previous corporate communications jobs, I understand the frustration of receiving copy that is nowhere near what is needed at the very last minute. My goal is for each assignment to reflect my very best work. I want to exceed your expectations.

Results you can expect:

  • The finished product is what you asked for, when you asked for it.
  • Clean copy, enlivened with anecdotes or stories when appropriate.
  • Complicated subjects (telecom, technology, energy) explained briefly, clearly, and without jargon. Information put in context and perspective provided.
  • Adherence to your guidelines and deadlines.
  • A team player who respects your time and wants to support you and free you for other more strategic work.
  • To pay only for the time and work you actually need, when you need it.

How do I approach my work?

Overall, I take a proactive, problem-solving, deadline-oriented approach to my assignments.

I bring curiosity and creativity and strategic thinking to each assignment. Every article is a learning opportunity and I challenge myself to come up with an interesting approach that will intrigue and then inform the reader. I am happy to collaborate with you and your team members.

How we will work together

I would begin by listening carefully to your concerns and needs so that we can share an understanding of your goals. I would provide honest feedback and help you brainstorm your project.

Working back from your deadline, I would create a timeline for gathering information either by telephone or email interviews or other research and then write the copy.

Things change on your end, I know, and I am always prepared to be flexible.
